If we are driving on the road when it is dark, it is extremely important to take all necessary precautions to avoid injuring any small animals that may be passing by.
Many nocturnal mammals such as the opossum utilize these hours to explore and forage . Unfortunately, many accidents happened that ended their lives.
Opossums are one of the few marsupials living in the Americas.
An opossum with her babies was exploring near the track when a car appeared out of nowhere and fatally injured her. Baby possums often cling to their mother ‘s back so they can follow her around, so they were also involved in the unexpected accident.
The driver just kept going without stopping.
Only one of the babies managed to be saved. Fortunately, a group of rescuers received news of what happened and went there as soon as possible. It was a truly devastating scene.
The baby was so small and defenseless that it refused to be separated from its mother ‘s body.
They took her to the vet and managed to verify that she was in very good health. He just needed a little attention and he would grow up healthy and strong, they decided to call him Poncho.
Since these little ones need their mother so much, they agreed that it would be best to find a temporary mother for him.
Poncho lives in South Carolina in the United States.
Luckily, in the Rare Species Fund there was a dog perfect for the task, it was a loving dog that had never had puppies. Something told them that they would manage to establish a good friendship and the success was practically instantaneous.
The dog is of the breed known as the white-coated German shepherd.
Poncho climbed on Hantu’s back and began to explore the world with his new mother. The sweet little dog loves spending the whole day with him and they even take naps together. It is a friendship that has left everyone speechless but reminds us once again how wonderful animals are and all the love they have to give.
More than 3 years have passed and Poncho and Hantu refuse to part.
Poncho and Hantu will continue to live together at the Rare Species Foundation. There, with their touching story, they will be able to help raise awareness about animal care. There is nothing like a good friend to carry on after the hardest times and this is exactly what beautiful Hantu means to Poncho.
